The Gardening Team

Thursday mornings are very busy at Sunshine, with the whole gardening team in attendance, consisting of Lynne, Geoff and Callum.

Lynne is a volunteer, horticulturist, and retired teacher who specialised in working with those with disabilities. She is also incredibly patient! Geoff is also a retired teacher, who is interested in learning more about growing. Callum was initially referred to our trainee programme through the Job Centre, when he heard we would have some growing facilities. They make a fantastic team!

Both Lynne and Geoff were initially customers we gradually got to know, and once we told them we had set up some raised beds, they were interested in helping. Lynne runs the sessions as she has the most gardening knowledge, but as she often comments, Callum is beginning to teach her too! Geoff is our resident waterer, often coming in on other days to ensure the vegetable beds aren’t drying out. He’s like a sponge, taking in all the information so he can grow at home.

One of our aims is to invest in local people to develop their skills and passion. The Gardening Team is a prime example of this.

Callum is still in his twenties, and watching his growth is such a joy. He is very thorough, has pride in his work, and loves showing off what he has planted. He genuinely lights up when describing which vegetables he is growing. He has even been taking photos and showing his family his progress each week, and doing his own research at home! We have witnessed Callum using his initiative more as his confidence is growing. Progress is slow and steady which is perfect for Callum and we’re happy to have him with us for as long as he’s comfortable.

For Lynne and Geoff, this volunteering opportunity helps them reinvest in their community by passing on skills and knowledge, as well as helping them meet people and feel useful and valued. They are a much appreciated part of the team at Sunshine Co-operative.

I have been working with Callum one session a week since 29th March. Callum is a delight to work with; he is pleasant and quiet. He does not say very much but answers questions sensibly. He has a very good memory and remembers things better than me! So far he has sown seeds, watered, done some tidying up, planted potatoes and done some pricking out. He is very adept at seed sowing, being very neat and tidy and is able to sow larger seeds separately with very little supervision once he has been shown what to do. A real skill! He keeps his eye on the seedlings and plants to see whether they need watering and is not afraid to ask questions too!

I am pushing him gently out of his comfort zone by encouraging him to make his own decisions with every job that we are involved in. He really is a pleasure to teach!
